Challenge
The Council of Landscape Architecture Registration Boards (CLARB), a forward-thinking, proactive organization, recognized a need to review and enhance its leadership development program to ensure that current and future leaders are provided with the necessary tools to successfully serve the organization. CLARB sought the services of ºûµûÖ±²¥ Consulting to guide them in this process. Focused on attracting individuals with skills well-matched to their respective roles, CLARB wanted to ensure that the leadership development program would provide a continuum of growth throughout one’s pathway of volunteer leadership service.
Process
In collaboration with a task force comprised of current, past, and future CLARB leaders and staff, ºûµûÖ±²¥ went to work. Consultants conducted research using a variety of methods, starting with a deep dive into CLARB’s current leadership development documents and processes. Further discovery included qualitative research with stakeholders and a quantitative survey to a wider audience of current and potential CLARB leaders. Research served to better understand elements of the current leadership development program and identify opportunities for refinement and growth. The analysis confirmed that a healthy foundation was already in place; based on recommendations informed through research, ºûµûÖ±²¥ and CLARB worked together to strengthen the program and ensure comprehensive support throughout the leadership development journey.
In a series of working meetings, ºûµûÖ±²¥ consultants, the CLARB Task Force and staff defined three distinct components of leadership development. Each component was based on an individual’s stage in the leadership journey and included training (aspiring/candidate), onboarding (newly elected), and professional development (currently serving leader). The program looked for ways to address each one.
Outcome
The result is an array of training and development topics offered in a variety of delivery methods that will enrich both the individuals who participate in the learning opportunities and the organization they serve. Truly a win-win solution.
